HIGH YIELD BONDS (JUNK BONDS)

JUNK BOND INVESTING IS HIGH RISK

Bonds fall into two categories, investment grade and below investment grade. Investment grade bonds have been rated by agencies such as Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s, and Fitch Ratings. Generally they are bonds that are judged by the rating agency as safe enough to meet payment obligations that banks are allowed to invest in them.

On the other hand, bonds that are not rated as investment grade bonds are known as high yield bonds or as junk bonds. Bonds that are below investment grade have a higher yield, or return on investment, but they also have a much higher risk of default. Often, brokers sell them as high yield bonds to entice investors to buy, but they do not explain that they are much higher risk and much more likely to go into default.

If you invested in high yield bonds at your broker’s recommendation and experienced losses, you might have a claim.
